Lake Bled was the highlight of Slovenia for all of us. We got up and drove there it was maybe an hour and a half drive, I was feeling sick so we said we would get some food once we got there but then nothing was open yet.. I was starting a downward spiral, luckily Byron and Rachael and Eric were mentally prepared to deal with me. We finally found a little Cafe that had just opened and got some toast and jam and some smoothies that were yummy, I did end up throwing up in their tiny bathroom right before we left to explore the lake. But felt better overall.
Lake Bled is truly something that fairy tails are made of. There is lake with a tiny island in the middle with a church built there and a castle overlooking the lake on a cliff side. It’s amazing thinking about how people hundreds of years ago brought all the materials over to build this large church in the middle of a lake. I would say that this day was one of the most magical of my life. You just don’t feel like anything is real when you are walking around this town because it is so picturesque. We got some of the most delicious vanilla ice cream from a little shop right by the water. We got into a large wooden row boat we had rented for an hour and Byron and Eric rowed us out to the island. It seriously felt like a dream as we looked at all the cute little cottages and the castle up on the cliff as we headed towards the church. We docked the boat next to all the other row boats on the island and climbed out.
When we climbed out of the boat we explored the little island. We decided not to go up into the church and the bell tower because it cost extra but we sat and enjoyed the weather grabbed a snack and listened to the bell toll. After enjoying ourselves for awhile we looked at the time and realized that we had to head back to return our row boat. So we got back into the boat and rowed back, we were laughing and telling all our most embarrassing stories and just cracking up and having the time of our lives. Also around this point I realized that I might be getting sunburned because it had been so sunny and I had forgotten my hat that day. So I put my sweatshirt up on my head and tried to protect my face. Turns out that it was too late.. I got quite a sunburn on my face and forehead.
Once we returned our boat Byron and I grabbed another vanilla ice cream cone and then we all walked around the lake. As we were walking around the lake we saw some signs for an Alpine slide. We decided to check it out and walked into the woods and towards the slide. When we got there we decided to go for it and waited in line. It was quite warm at the moment and I was feeling sick so Byron had to run and find me some water while we waited in line. Then we got to ride the lift up and it was so beautiful. I felt nervous before going on the slide so I went last, Eric, Rachael, Byron and then I all went down and it was a blast. Byron never used the brakes and almost caught up to Rachael, I did use the brakes because it really felt so fast! After we finished the slide then we went back into town and decided to get some of the famous Lake Bled cream cake. We had been on the fence about getting it so we decided to get one piece and split it four ways. But it was so delicious that we had to go back and get another piece.
That night we went back to Ljubljana and ended up grabbing some burgers from a place similar to shake shack and it was delicious. We started our road trip through Croatia the next day.
